About Us

The Democratic Women of Monterey County (DWMC) is a volunteer organization that champions Democratic candidates and campaigns on political issues that affect all citizens while emphasizing the role of women.  DWMC is dedicated to creating opportunities for Democratic women to interact, participate, and educate themselves and the community about political candidates and issues.

 

Board of Directors

Priscilla Walton, PhD, is a retired professor of education from University of California Santa Cruz and consultant for the California Commission on Teacher Training and the California Department of Education in Sacramento, California. She has been active over the years in numerous political and service organizations both in Davis and Carmel. She is a former Davis Planning Commissioner, former board member on the Monterey League of Women Voters, current president of the Democratic Women of Monterey County, and president of the Carmel Valley White Oaks Home Owner's Association. She is a member of the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee.

Ruth Rachel has worked on numerous campaigns for Democratic candidates in Monterey County during the past three years.  Ruth also volunteers for the Carmel Bach Festival, and serves on the Community Activities and Cultural Commission for Carmel by-the-Sea. She has lived in Carmel for the last ten years with husband Michael, after moving from Minneapolis, MN. In Minneapolis, Ruth was a Procurement Executive with Honeywell, Inc.

Holly Carlin is a Certified Public Accountant with her own practice in Monterey.  Holly is a local political activist and is treasurer of the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee and is our new treasurer for DWMC.  She has also worked on various political campaigns.  Holly has been on the Monterey Peninsula for more than twenty years, raised her now grown children here, and has been active in many local non-profits.

Amy L. White has served as the executive director of Land Watch since November of 2009.  She began her career teaching high school civics and world history, and more recently, Amy worked on the successful campaign to elect Jane Parker as District 4 Supervisor. She received her Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Leon Panetta Institute at California State University Monterey Bay, where her thesis focused on how to address the problem of development in agricultural communities. Amy is a Paul Harris Fellow and a charter member of the Salinas Alisal Rotary Club; a current member of the Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club; and is a member of the steering committee of Monterey Contemporaries at the Monterey Museum of Art.

Elizabeth Turner Fox recently moved, together with her husband, Rich Fox, to Carmel Valley from Malibu, California.  Prior to this she lived, studied, and worked in China for more than ten years, speaks fluent Mandarin, and has successfully developed and managed US-China cross-border initiatives, developing successful alliances between industry-leading organizations in both countries. As a committed environmentalist she is focused on creating platforms to bring the US and China together in order to combat global climate change.

Lynne Weatherman Frey brings a deep knowledge of web design and development to the DWMC Board.  When not volunteering for democratic causes, she gardens and loves to play bridge. She also serves as an alternate on the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee.

Ruth Thompson moved to the area in fall 2009 from Washington, DC, where she specialized in strategic communications. She has worked in commercial TV, public radio, national nonprofit management, international organization leadership and federal service as an appointee in the Carter Administration. She was executive director of the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce through July 2010 and lectures in the CSUMB School of Business.  In addition to DWMC, she serves on the boards of Leadership Monterey Peninsula and Access Monterey Bay.

Ruth Thompson

Noelle White works as a field representative for 27th District Assemblymember, Bill Monning, in his Monterey District Office.  In addition to being on the board of directors for the Democratic Women of Monterey County, she also serves on the Monterey County Young Professionals Group Management Team and is the Assemblymember's alternate to the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee.  She graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a double major in Business Economics and Communication.

Noelle White

 

Vicki Williams moved to Monterey in 1967 working for Bank of America with her last position being Facility Manager at Fort Ord ending 1979. She moved to Garmish, Germany starting a thirty-year Federal career with Department of the Army that took her to Nurnberg, New York City and back to Monterey in 1989. Her last agency was with DOD at Defense Manpower Data Center in Seaside. She served as a Data Project Manager before retiring in 2010.  Now volunteering at DWMC, C4C and Special Olympics. Currently serves as alternate on the steering committee for Peace Coalition Monterey County representing Monterey County Democratic Central Committee and treasurer for her homeowner association. She enjoys playing bridge as often as possible.

Vicki Williams

Melissa Mileff Burnett is a decorative arts historian, specializing in 20th century costume.  She has worked with the Monterey History and Arts Association, as well as the Textile Museum and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.  Melissa is a trustee of the Monterey Museum of Art, and volunteers for local arts and education organizations.  She has worked on campaigns for several Democrats, including the 2008 Obama campaign and her husband's campaign for Carmel City Council.

Melissa Mileff Burnett, Ex-Officio

Carla Garnham is retired from her career in academic computing.  She and her husband resided in Wisconsin for 36 years where she was CIO at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and at the Medical College of Wisconsin. They are loving life in the Monterey Peninsula.  Carla is an avid bridge player and an alternate to the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee.
